After running out of my DIY toothpaste, the natural deodorant I had been using and my mascara, I decided to get a little groovy and make each of these from scratch using completely natural, cruelty-free ingredients. Making these products all in one hit was both time and cost effective as many of the ingredients were required for all three of the recipes. It is also significantly cheaper than buying each of these items conventionally.
Let’s start with the deodorant.
Prior to making my own, I had been using Schmidt’s deodorant, which is an excellent vegan deodorant that is completely natural and ACTUALLY WORKS. Before purchasing it, I scoured the web for recommended natural deodorants and Schmidt’s deodorant seemed to top every list of recommendations. They also have a wide range of invigorating scents and are available either in a stick or jar form. And great news, they now stock it in Biome!
After checking the ingredients on the back of the Schmidt’s deodorant jar, I realised how easy it would be to make my own version, especially as the natural toothpaste I planned to make required many of the same ingredients. So I jetted off to Biome’s naked beauty bar and set to work. Not sure where to acquire the needed ingredients? You can easily order them from Biome’s online store, a company dedicated to less waste, less toxins and less impact.
To my immense satisfaction, I found the deodorant to be even better than the excellent natural deodorant I had been using previously. I did not sweat a drop or emanate any smell a part from a delightful cinnamon scent added as an essential oil to the deodorant. Feel free to use a different essential oil in the recipe depending on your desired scent!
And don’t worry, the deodorant only took about five minutes to make, so is super quick and easy (even for those who are time-poor)!
Now, time to get down to business.
- 1/4 cup coconut oil
- 1/4 cup bicarb soda
- 1/4 cup bentonite clay
- 6 drops cinnamon essential oil (or another selected essenetial oil)
- Mix bi carb soda and bentonite clay together in a non-metallic bowl with a wooden spoon.
- Add the coconut oil and mix well.
- Add your chosen essential oil (I used cinnamon).
- Pour the mixture into a small glass mason jar, then add a mini paddle pop stick to use as a spatula.
*Note: To apply the deodorant, use a mini paddle pop stick (or something similar) to pick up a small amount of the deodorant, rub between your fingers and apply to your armpits 🙂
I’d love to hear how well this recipe works for you in keeping you fresh! Stay tuned for my DIY toothpaste and mascara recipes…
